Exclusive GRAMMY.com Interview With Carly Rae Jepsen GRAMMY-NOMINATED ARTIST DISCUSSES SONGWRITING, TOURING AND HER SONG OF THE YEAR-NOMINATED TRACK, "CALL ME MAYBE"
GRAMMY nominee Carly Rae Jepsen was recently the featured guest at a GRAMMY Camp — SoundCheck program hosted by The Recording Academy's Nashville Chapter. Joined by drummer Nik Pešut and songwriter Tavish Crowe, Jepsen participated in an exclusive interview with GRAMMY.com and discussed songwriting, her experience as a GRAMMY nominee and her hit Song Of The Year-nominated track, "Call Me Maybe," among other topics.
"I think I constantly want to develop as a songwriter. It's my greatest passion," said Jepsen. "I love being onstage, I love traveling and getting to see the world through music this way, but nothing beats just kind of being locked up in a studio and writing a song."
Singer/songwriter Jepsen established herself as a popular performer in Canada after placing third on "Canadian Idol" in 2007. The following year she released her debut full-length album, Tug Of War. In 2012 Jepsen released a six-track EP,Curiosity, featuring the breakout hit "Call Me Maybe." Fellow Canadian Justin Bieber tweeted about the song, propelling it to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Call Me Maybe" became the second best-selling global single in 2012, selling more than 12.5 million units. Jepsen's U.S. debut, Kiss, was released in September 2012 and reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200. Kiss contains 10 tracks written or co-written by Jepsen, including "Tonight I'm Getting Over You" and "Call Me Maybe," the latter of which garnered 55th GRAMMY nominations for Song Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Jepsen appeared as a presenter on the 55th GRAMMY telecast. She is currently in the midst of a global tour, with dates scheduled through August.
